Back Pain
CAN A BACK PAIN DOCTOR PROVIDE TREATMENT FOR THE SACROILIAC JOINT?
Our skilled team of chiropractors can offer you a non-surgical solution for pain in the sacroiliac joint in the lower back.
Our approaches for treatment
After diagnosis, our doctor will present you with two manipulation treatment options.
(1) A spinal manipulation, which is a high velocity, low amplitude thrust and the most common treatment option.
(2) A spinal mobilization, which is a gentle and less forceful thrust.
Spinal Manipulation
This form of treatment is carried out while the patient is lying on their side. The doctor will bend the patient’s knee, raising it towards their chest, before positioning the patient’s shoulder forward so as to stretch the lower back. The doctor will push on the patient’s sacroiliac joint to gently apply pressure before applying a high volume thrust. It is possible that the patient may hear a cracking sound. This is called cavitation and it is simply the escaping of gasses from the joint. This process will bring the patient immediate relief.
Spinal Mobilization
If a patient prefers to not hear the sounds associated with cavitation, doctors may opt for a spinal mobilization. During this process, the patient while lie face down on top of a series of padded blocks, allowing the chiropractor to use gravitational forces while slowly re-aligning the sacroiliac joint. A specialized table can also be used that allows for strategic adjustments along the patients spine while isolating the pain. Another technique to mobilize the spine is called patient-assisted leg traction, where the doctor gently stretches the patient’s leg according to various angles.
OTHER APPROACHES
The Graston Technique
The Graston technique uses an instrument to treat back pain through soft tissue therapy, increasing physical functionality by identifying and breaking up scar tissue.
Can a chiropractor injure me?
Many patients fear the possibility that something can go wrong during chiropractic treatment; however, most chiropractic mistakes result from an inexperienced or unqualified chiropractor. To avoid receiving unqualified care, patients should do research to determine if chiropractic is the best treatment for their condition as well as to confirm their chiropractor has the training and experience necessary to perform safe and effective treatment.
Chiropractic care comes with many pain relieving benefits and a consultation may help in resolving any doubts or concerns that you may have.
Should I speak with my doctor before I see a chiropractor?
Chiropractic is not always the best method of treatment for certain patients or conditions. You should always consult with both your physician as well as your prospective chiropractor to ensure that chiropractic care is right for you.
